The 1st Round Rockall Race | Galway Ireland | June 2012

About the Race

The 1st Round Rockall Race will take place from Galway, Ireland in June 2012. Organised by Galway Bay Sailing Club and the Round Rockall Race Committee, the 650nm yacht race will depart from Galway Bay, round the islet of Rockall in the North Atlantic Ocean and finish in Galway Bay. The race will coincide with the finish in Galway of the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race.

Rockall

Wikipedia defines Rockall as “an extremely small, uninhabited, remote rocky islet in the North Atlantic Ocean”. It is the tip of an undersea rock formation located at Lat. 57° 36′ 20” N, Long. 13° 41′ 32” W or thereabouts. It is approximately 301.4 kilometres (187.3 mi) west of the islands of St. Kilda, Scotland, and 430 kilometres (267.2 mi) north-west of Donegal in Ireland.

Ownership of Rockall is disputed by the Ireland, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Iceland. While Rockall has attracted adventurers and eccentrics for many years, we like to think we’re on the adventure side of the equation. Mostly.
